(UK, slang) Slimelight, an alternative club night in London, established in the 1980s.

For parents

Slimes means: Slimelight, an alternative club night in London, established in the 1980s.. It is informal slang, fine in casual speech but not suited to formal contexts. There is no real cause for parental concern; it is descriptive vocabulary rather than risky behaviour. If your teen uses it, context will usually make the intent clear. A short, curious question about where they heard it is usually all that is needed to know whether to follow up.

For ESL learners

Slimes means: Slimelight, an alternative club night in London, established in the 1980s.. Register: very informal, slang. Suitable only for casual conversation, chat and social media. Do not use in business, academic or news writing. Common learner mistake is using the word in a register it does not fit, or assuming a single global meaning; always check the context before producing it yourself.

  • slimes are fun in theory, but i can never seem to buy in conceptually to them being fuckable. whether fucking or doing the fucking, im always just feeling like, well, that's goo. i know goos too soft. what are you getting from fucking jello.

  • I'm obsessed with Belzona, makers of engineered adhesives and pastes and slimes and whatnot. They have an enormous pile of videos just showing the application of their various industrial creams and lotions. It's astonishing. www.facebook.com/BelzonaOffic...

  • I'm still *vaguely* hopeful for pixel-accurate slimes, magma cubes & sulfur cubes, and renewable cinnabar. In theory those wouldn't necessarily count as "features", but it doesn't seem as likely at this point. We've yet to see the Panorama though, so we shall see.

Why is this section here?

Slang is read by different audiences for very different reasons. The For parents view re-explains the term in plain, non-judgemental language so a caregiver can understand what their child means without needing the surrounding subculture. The For English learners view focuses on register (when it's safe to use), formal alternatives, and common mistakes — what a textbook won't teach you.
