A pressed check is a pointed social call-out — asking someone, directly or rhetorically, whether they're actually bothered, upset, or emotionally invested in something they're claiming not to care about. It's the verbal equivalent of holding up a mirror to someone's energy. If someone is going in hard on a situation with a lot of words and feelings, a pressed check is the moment their audience says: are you okay, because you seem very pressed right now. Simultaneously diagnostic and devastating.

A moment of pause — either self-initiated or called out by someone else — to assess whether bitterness, resentment, or wounded pride is influencing someone's behavior or take. A salty check is what happens when a friend's critique gets a little too specific, when someone's 'honest opinion' has a suspicious edge to it, or when you catch yourself writing a third draft of a passive-aggressive text. Can be affectionate or pointed. Crucially, failing a salty check doesn't mean you're wrong — just that your delivery is compromised.

A moment of self-assessment or external evaluation to confirm whether someone is living up to the iconic, unbothered, serving-at-all-times standard that "mother" demands. A mother check asks: are you actually delivering? Is the look locked? Is the energy correct? Are you conducting yourself with the authority and effortless excellence that the title implies? It can be a genuine self-audit before a big moment or a playful challenge thrown at someone whose performance has slipped below their stated standards.

A moment of reality-testing to figure out whether someone's being bribed or paid off behind the scenes. Called out when a deal feels too smooth or a decision seems suspicious. "Hold on, we need a schmear check on this whole approval."

A quick verbal or social audit of whether a situation, plan, or group is holding together under pressure — borrowed from the agile stand-up format but used ironically in everyday chaos. Someone calling a scrum check in the wild means they want everyone to briefly surface what's going wrong before things spiral further. Used in friend groups, shared households, and overloaded team chats as a shorthand for 'let's take thirty seconds to acknowledge we are barely functioning before we continue.'
