G.I. Jane is an American slang term for a female soldier in the US military, modelled on the male 'G.I. Joe'. 'G.I.' stands for 'Government Issue' or 'General Infantry', terms associated with US military personnel since World War II. The phrase gained wider cultural recognition after the 1997 Demi Moore film of the same name, which depicted a woman undergoing elite special forces training. It is typically used informally and can be applied admiringly or in a slightly patronising way depending on context.
She'd been called G.I. Jane by her drill instructor on the first day, and the nickname stuck for her entire deployment.
